Derbyshire Spartans merge with Hoods

The Nottingham Hoods are delighted to announce its expansion through a merger with the successful, Derbyshire Spartans.

The 2019/20 season was cut short for the Spartans due to the Coronavirus and following an internal review, conversations were started between the two clubs on a possible merger.

In the previous season, the successful Spartans programme saw the u18s become the first group from the club to graduate Junior basketball with players moving on to pursue different opportunities in basketball or other sports. Spartans were keen to offer a full performance pathway for their club, starting younger and offering opportunities at Senior National League, BUCS and even in to Masters Basketball, which prompted the start of conversations with the Hoods.

Key to the discussion was the desire of both parties to continue the legacy left by Spartans and ensure the hard work from players, coaches and staff at the organisation not go to waste but be harnessed and developed at a higher level.

The Hoods/Spartans merger has been completed and will see the Nottingham Hoods work with Nottingham Trent University to compete in Division 2 with NTU Hoods, the U18 Premier team will now become the Nottingham Hoods U18 Premier, whilst the U16 team will become Hoods U16 Conference.

A Spartans spokesman commented, “We are immensely proud of everything the Spartans National League side has achieved and it has been a huge privilege to be able to provide basketball to the young people of Derby. We are so thankful to everyone who has been involved in the Spartans and have given us the opportunity to support their development. We can now turn our attention to helping develop a new set of young people and work to promote the Spartans ethos in Nottingham Basketball. We cannot wait to get started.”

Hoods GM Lee English added, “I’m happy to join forces and bring some talent within to join us. Dan and Becks’ experience is a massive asset and will help us take the Hoods to the next level.”
