Hoods bring in two new signings

NOTTINGHAM Hoods are on course for promotion as they prepare to kick off the second half of their season
They suffered only one defeat – against Birmingham Mets – in the opening half of the season in Division Four of the National League.
And they have strengthened their squad over the mid-season break with the signing of two players – 6ft 7in Anthony Haase and 6ft 5in Williams Omope.
The Hoods return to action on Saturday when they travel to Worcester Wolves, followed by a game at Nottingham Wildcats Arena, in Bakersfield, against Team Gloster Jets on January 23 (7.30pm).
Hoods move up to second

NOTTINGHAM Hoods had an 88-52 win over mid-table Reading Rockets II to move into second spot in Division Four of the England (Midlands) League.
Rockets, weakened by injuries, could only field eight players, while the Hoods were at full strength with the return of Anthony Scott and James Sutton.
The visitors shocked Hoods by taking a 5-0 lead but Hoods finished the first period up 20-19.
In the second period Hoods contained the Rockets offence and led 36-30.
The final period saw the Rockets run out of steam as the Hoods took full control to win the period 35-6.
Guy Renton top-scored with 16 points, while Scott and Tobias Benjamin hit 12 points and Gary Collins ten.
The Hoods are next in home action on January 23 (7.30pm) against struggling Team Gloster Jets.

Benjamin stars as Cougars are mauled

NOTTINGHAM Hoods had a crucial 71-59 win over local rivals Coalville Cougars in the England National League.
Guy Renton started the scoring with a lay-up but a three from Fernandez put the visitors in the driving seat.
From then on Hoods dominated with some great defence and scoring from Tobias Benjamin, Kirk Davis, Gary Collins and the improving Kallum Dunn. It gave Hoods a healthy 32-14 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
But Cougars scored ten points at the start of the quarter to bring the scores back to 25-24 for the Hoods.
A time-out by coach Lee English saw a change and with Renton, Benjamin and Davis leading a strong finish to the half and a final two points from Collins, they went in 39-27 to the good.
Benjamin then started to dominate the floor for Hoods, scoring ten of their 18 points in the next quarter. He was supported by good performances from Matt Wood, Dunn and Durome Miller.
Davis was pulled out early after getting into foul trouble.
The final quarter saw Coalville pull out five quick points but responses from Renton and Benjamin saw a 14- point lead restored. Littered by free throws, this quarter was dominated by fouls and four late points by the Cougars gave their score respectability.
Benjamin hit 22 points and the consistent Renton weighed in with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Bruce Lauder, playing against his former team, finished with eight rebounds and two points.
Hoods are at home at Nottingham Wildcats Arena on Saturday (7.30pm).
New signing stard for Hoods

NOTTINGHAM Hoods, fielding new signings Gary Collins and Matt Wood, easily beat bottom side Team Birmingham 85-36.
Hoods stormed into a 7-0 lead and never looked like losing.
Guy Renton topped scored with 25 points and restricted Birmingham's leading scorer Neil Nesbet to just eight points.
Collins chipped in with a valuable 18 for Hoods who lead 44-18 at half-time.
In the final period, Hoods stepped up their efforts to increase their points difference that could have an effect on league positions at the end of the season.
Kirk Davis did well to notch 14 points ahead of Kallum Dunn (9), Anthony Scott (8), Bruce Lauder (6) and Ben Flook (5).
On Saturday at the Wildcats Arena (7.30pm), the Hoods have a top-of-the-table clash against rivals Coalville Cougars, who have lost just two games this season.
Coach Lee English is looking for a big crowd to act as a catalyst to a vital win in what will be a close game.

NOTTINGHAM Hoods shocked Milton Keynes Lions 64-63 away from home thanks to a last-gasp free-throw from Tobias Benjamin.
Despite missing James Gardener, Derome Miller and Tony Palmer, the Hoods turned on the power with 25 points from Guy Renton.
Anthony Scott chipped in with eight while Benjamin, James Sutton and Kallum Dunn all grabbed seven.
Scott and Dunn helped the Hoods take a 17-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Hoods limited the home side to five points to lead 31-19 at the break.
Lions poured on the pressure after that. With only one second on the normal game clock and the scores level, Benjamin was fouled in the act of shooting.
Although he missed his first attempt he kept his cool to sink the second shot and give the Hoods the narrowest of wins.
Hoods are at home to the college of West Anglia Fury on Saturday (7/30pm)..
Renton hits 35 as Hoods are pipped at the death

NOTTINGHAM Hoods were pipped 76-77 by Derby Trailblazers, who play in the league above them.
The lead changing hands 12 times, with the scores were tied on seven occasions.
And if a shot on the final buzzer had gone in instead of hitting the rim it would have been a perfect day for the Hoods.
The Hoods took a 4-0 lead through Guy Renton and Kirk Davis and, with Renton in red-hot form, they closed the first session leading 26-19.
The third quarter saw Hoods punished by a barrage of three- point shots from the Blazers, who stormed into a 56-53 lead.
In the final quarter, James Sutton leveled at 56-56 and then Davis and Antony Scott edged Hoods in front again.
With just over a minute to go Renton made it 70-68. But Derby leveled at 70-70 to force overtime.
Lee English, Tobias Benjamin and Renton scored to put Hoods one-up in the last minute.
Potts then gave Derby a one-point advantage with one possession to go. Hoods made the most of it and got a shot off on the buzzer but it hit the rim and denied them victory.
There were good displays from youngsters Kallum Dunn and Ben Flook supported by Bruce Lauder, Mike Griffith and Derome Miller.
But the game was lost at the three-point arc with the Hoods dropping just three from nine.
Renton led the scoring with 35 points from Benjamin (10) and James Gardiner (9).
Tomorrow, the Hoods travel to Milton Keynes in the England Basketball National League (6pm). Hoods are at home to West Anglian Fury on November 14 (7.30pm).
Hoods go down to Birmingham home defeat

THE Hoods were well beaten 69-54 at home by current league leaders Birmingham Mets.
Hoods had a full team available but had to play catch-up from the first tip.
However, with Bruce Lauder leading all scorers with 14 points, Nottingham showed they where not going to just lay down and surrender.
Birmingham finished the first period two points up but stretched away to go into the break 40-24 in front.
In the final period, both teams found their shooting range and traded baskets to the end but Birmingham had already done enough to ease to victory.
Guy Renton (12 points) and James Gardener (11 points) offered useful support to Lauder.
The Hoods are at home in an East Midlands Cup clash against Derby Trailblazers II this Sunday. Tip off at the Wildcats Arena is 1pm.
Hoods too hot for jets

NOTTINGHAM Hoods injury-hit squad shrugged off the loss of top scorer James Gardiner to beat the Gloster Jets 78-52 at Deer Park.
Hoods finished the first quarter up 24-19 and led 43-29 at half-time.
Nottingham kept up the pressure after the break and pulled out to a 21-point lead at the end of the third at 60-39. Despite resting some of the starting line-up in the fourth quarter, they still managed to take this 18-13, finishing 78-52 ahead. Captain Guy Renton top-scored with 25 points.
On Saturday Hoods clash with Birmingham Mets at Nottingham Wildcats Arena.
Hoods win on home debut

NOTTINGHAM Hoods made their home debut with a crowd of more than 300 shouting them on and didn't let them down with a 70-60 win over Worcester Wolves II.
Hoods introduced two new signings to their National League campaign in Tom Wade and Tobias Benjamin.
Hoods took control from the very first tip, led by the reliable captain Guy Renton on his birthday. He got outstanding support from Anthony Scott, Bruce Lauder, James Gardener and Kirk Davis as Hoods went in at half-time winning 34-27.
Top scorers for the Hoods were James Gardener (22 points), Guy Renton (16) and Kirk Davis and Tobias Benjamin with eight.
Hoods travel to Team Gloucester this weekend with a major injury worry to top scorer Gardener (knee).

NOTTINGHAM Hoods opened their league campaign away at the Reading Rocket II but had to work hard for the win.
Hoods took time to wake up and were behind 18-14 at the end of the first quarter.
Coaches Lee English and Michael Griffith managed to turn things round and the Hoods were leading by half-time.
Hoods used good squad rotation in the second half to build up a narrow lead and held on to win.
James Gardiner led the way to top score with 17 points. Other scorers were Guy Renton (14) and Kallum Dunn (13).
This Saturday Hoods make their home debut at the Wildcats arena with a 7.30pm start.

South Notts College recruit well

SOUTH Nottingham College's Athlete Performance Programme (APP) has recruited well for the 2009/10 season in football, rugby, basketball and hockey.
SNC currently has 100 male footballers vying for places in five teams and 24 females fighting for the shirt in the new ECFA Women's Football Academy League.
There are also 24 rugby players preparing for the BCS trials before their first League outing against Derby College in three weeks time under the watchful eyes of John Widdowson and Neil Fowkes from Nottingham Rugby.
SNC has also joined forces with Nottingham Hoods Basketball to create a new exciting basketball scheme in both BCS and Regional Leagues.

NOTTINGHAM Hoods went down 85-57 to Division One team Leicester Warriors in the National cup.
Warriors where to too strong for the Hoods, who had James Sutton missing with a muscle strain and Guy Renton playing through the pain barrier.
James Gardiner, returning to the courts after taking time out to pursue other sports, was top scorer with 25 points.
Kirk Davis weighed-in with 12 points, Guy Renton scored seven and Anthony Scott six.

NOTTINGHAM'S newest men's National League team, the Hoods, started their campaign with a 62-46 win in the Shield at the College of West Anglia Fury.
Head coach Lee English has a good mix of experienced and new players in an attempt to put Nottingham men's basketball back on the map.
Guy Renton (19 points) was in good form and their other scorers were James Gardiner (10), James Sutton (8), Kirk Davis (8), Anthony Scott (5), Michael Griffith (4), Bruce Lauder (4), Kallum Dunn (3) and Ben Flook (1).
Hoods travel to Leicester Warriors from Division One for a cup game on Saturday (3.30).
The first home game is on October 10 at the Nottingham Wildcats Arena.
