Date: 10 January 2026
Final Score: Hoods 79 – Outlaws 37
The Nottingham Hoods U14s returned to action for their first game of the new year with confidence quietly building. Having edged past the Ilkeston Outlaws earlier in the season, the Hoods knew they would need patience and discipline to impose themselves once again. From the opening tip, the home side set the tone, determined to start 2026 with energy, intensity, and control.
Q1 – Fast Start, Firm Foundations
The Hoods wasted no time asserting themselves, opening the scoring early and immediately setting a defensive standard. Relentless work on both defensive and offensive rebounds limited the Outlaws to long-range jump shots, while strong help defence prevented easy looks inside.
Ilkeston found some success through their playmaker from distance, but the Hoods’ response was measured and effective. Drawing fouls without allowing the visitors to capitalise at the line, the Hoods built momentum. A three-point foul was punished in full, and slick ball movement turned stops into scores. By the end of a dominant opening quarter, the Hoods had surged ahead 23–11.
Q2 – Pressure Builds, Lead Grows
The second quarter picked up where the first left off. The Hoods continued to dominate the boards, securing defensive rebounds and converting chances at the other end. Spacing across the court improved, and laser-sharp passes repeatedly opened scoring opportunities.
Ilkeston struggled to cope with the tempo, gifting the Hoods chances at the free throw line as pressure mounted. A beautifully timed drive-and-dish through the paint highlighted the Hoods’ unselfish play. Defensively, the Hoods made life uncomfortable on second possessions, contesting shots and denying rhythm. The advantage grew steadily, and the teams headed into the break with the Hoods firmly in control at 46–24.
At half-time, the coaching message was clear: maintain defensive intensity to keep Ilkeston’s score below 40, and move the ball with purpose to ensure every player on the roster contributed on the scoreboard.
Q3 – Control and Composure
The Hoods started the third quarter with purpose, adding points through well-taken baskets and strong work around the rim, while the Outlaws failed to take advantage of opportunities from the line. Interior defence came to the fore, with key blocks and forced turnovers preventing Ilkeston from even attempting shots on several possessions.
At 55–26 midway through the quarter, the Hoods entered a controlled phase of play. Coaches called for continued focus, mindful that loose passes and creeping fouls could offer a way back in. The message was received, and the Hoods closed the quarter with maturity, maintaining tempo and discipline to lead 59–33.
Q4 – Depth, Defence, and a Team Effort
Shots briefly refused to drop early in the final quarter despite well-worked offensive sets, but the Outlaws were unable to capitalise at the other end thanks to relentless Hoods defence. Passing lanes were shut down, and Ilkeston struggled to build any attacking rhythm.
A strong driving run steadied the ship, and as the quarter wore on, the Hoods’ depth shone through. Scoring contributions came from across the roster, underlining a complete team performance. With energy sustained to the final buzzer, the Hoods closed out an emphatic 79–37 victory.
