Saturday night saw the McDonald’s Nottingham Hoods Basketball Club claim their spot at the top of the National League, leapfrogging their opponents in the process.
Another sell out crowd of well over 200 strong came to watch the top of the table clash and both teams were noticeably pumped and ready for what was going to be the biggest game of the season so far.
Liverpool took control early in the game hitting back to back three point shots, as well as asserting their authority physically inside the paint, but the Hoods kept the games close and gave the crowd something to shout about with their fast breaking and high flying style of play. At the end of the first, they trailed 20-26.
The game remained close throughout the next two quarters. Inspite of Scott, Siczek, Mitchel and Urbistondo hitting big shots and boosting the tempo, at the end of of the third, the Hoods still trailed 49-52
In the 4th quarter the two teams traded baskets until, with 6 minutes to go, the Hoods took the lead for the first time in the match, bringing huge roars from the crowd. The noise inspired the Hoods to push on and fuelled a run of 10 unanswered points to put the Hoods up with just 3 minutes to go.
Liverpool were not going to lie down though and went on a run of their own to take back the lead as the tension in the arena increased. It was the Hoods that kept their nerve and finished the important points, as well as being calm from the foul line to hold on for the win and calim top spot in the table, much to the appreciation of the home fans, final score, Nottingham Hoods 72 – 67 Liverpool Basketball Club.
